Drug name: Generic Xenical (Orlistat)
Therapeutic effects: The drug works by inhibiting the effects of gastrointestinal lypase, this decreasing the amounts of fat absorbed into the blood stream. The drug is intended to be taken during food intake in order to affect the normal food digestion. The inactivated enzyme lypase loses its ability to break down fats to its low molecular components, thus the fat is not digested. The effects of the drug may be monitored within 24 hours after the intake as the concentration of fats in the fecal masses increases.
Indications: The preparation is normally indicated in treatment of obesity or patients suffering from excessive weight, including those with obesity associated risk factors. The drug may be used in combination with glucose lowering preparations, which are used in type 2 diabetes treatment.
