Drug name: Generic Proscar (finasteride)

Therapeutic effects:

Generic Proscar inhibits 5-alpha reductase type II (an enzyme that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone), and reduces the biosynthesis of dihydrotestosterone. Suppression of DHT production is accompanied by reduction of the size of the prostate gland, increase of the maximum speed of urine flow and decrease of the symptoms of urinary tract obstruction associated with BPH. Elimination of clinical manifestations of BPH may require several months of treatment. Reduction of the prostate size occurs in about 3 months, while reduction of the general symptoms and symptoms of urinary tract obstruction - in 7 months.

Indications:

Generic Proscar is indicated for treatment of adenoma of the prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia) in order to:

reduce the size of the prostate gland
improve urine flow
reduce the symptoms associated with prostatic hyperplasia
reduce the risk of acute urinary retention

Generic Proscar is not effective in patients with prostate cancer.
